In Rudyard Kipling Just so Story, How the Elephant got his Trunk, the elephant has a small nose until his curiosity about what the crocodile has for dinner leads him to the Limpopo River. He finds out that crocodile has, "elephant child" for dinner! The crocodile bites him on the nose. In his struggle to get free the elephant stretches his nose into a trunk.
